The Great Sin

WELCOME TO HANOVER VALLEY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Our purpose is to become an authentic community that knows Christ and makes His grace and truth known with such power and glory that lives are transformed by the gospel, multiplying worship and praise to God throughout Hanover and the world.

Welcome. We’re glad that you’re with us. We hope you’ll find joyful worship that engages both your heart and mind, as well as genuine friendship and a caring atmosphere. Please take advantage of any of the opportunities offered here. If we can serve you in any way today, simply speak to one of the ushers.

Children are welcome to stay in the service, but if you prefer, quality childcare is provided throughout the service for children from infants to kindergarten aged. Please speak to one of our ushers for locations.

This bulletin will guide you through the service – just start on the next page and continue as the pastor leads. (Moments when you should stand are noted).

As a courtesy to you and those around you, we ask that you please mute cell phones during the worship time.

To all who are spiritually weary and seek rest;
To all who mourn and long for comfort;
To all who struggle and desire victory;
To all who sin and need a Savior;
To all who are strangers and want fellowship;
To all who hunger and thirst after righteousness;
And to all who will come,
this church opens wide her doors and
offers welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ

REFLECTIONS

The doctrines of grace humble a man without degrading him, and exalt him without inflating him.
Charles Hodge

Through pride the devil became the devil. Pride leads to every vice, it’s the complete anti-God state of mind.
C. S. Lewis

Prelude

Call to Worship

Gathering Songs (Please Stand)

You’re the Lion of Judah

You’re the Lion of Judah, the Lamb who was slain,
You ascended to heaven and evermore will reign.
At the end of the age when the earth You reclaim
You will gather the nations before you.
And the eyes of all men will be fixed
On the Lamb who was crucified,
With wisdom and mercy and justice
You’ll reign at Your Father’s side.

Chorus: And the angels will cry “Hail the Lamb
Who was slain for the world, rule in pow’r.”
And the earth will reply, “You shall reign
As the King of all kings and the Lord of all lords.”

There’s a shield in our hand and a sword at our side;
There’s a fire in our spirits that cannot be denied,
‘Cause the Father has told us, for these You have died,
For the nations who gather before You.
And the ears of all men need to hear
Of the Lamb who was crucified,
Who descended to hell, yet was raised up
To reign at His Father’s side. Chorus

Friend of Sinners

Redeemer! Whither should I flee,
Or how escape the wrath to come?
The weary sinner flies to thee
For shelter from impending doom;
Smile on me, gracious Lord,
And show thyself a Friend of sinners now
Smile on me, gracious Lord,
And show thyself a Friend of sinners now.

Beneath the shadow of thy cross
The heavy laden soul finds rest;
I would esteem the world but dross,
So I might be of Christ possessed.
I’d seek my every joy in thee,
Be thou both life and light to me.
I’d seek my every joy in thee,
Be thou both life and light to me.

Close to the highly shameful tree,
Jesus, my humbled soul would cleave;
Despised and crucified with thee,
With thee resolved to die and live;
This prayer and this ambition mine,
Living and dying to be thine.
This prayer and this ambition mine,
Living and dying to be thine.

Give Us Clean Hands

We bow our hearts, we bend our knees;
Oh Spirit, come make us humble.
We turn our eyes from evil things;
Oh Lord, we cast down our idols.

Chorus: Give us clean hands, give us pure hearts;
Let us not lift our souls to another.
Give us clean hands, give us pure hearts;
Let us not lift our souls to another.

And oh God, let us be a generation that seeks,
That seeks Your face, oh God of Jacob;
And oh God, let us be a generation that seeks,
That seeks Your face, oh God of Jacob.

We bow our hearts, we bend our knees;
Oh Spirit, come make us humble.
We turn our eyes from evil things;
Oh Lord, we cast down our idols. Chorus

Give us clean hands, give us pure hearts;
Let us not lift our souls to another.
Give us clean hands, give us pure hearts;
Let us not lift our souls to another.

Corporate Prayer of Confession

Dear Father, we are thankful that your mercy is higher than the heavens, wider than our wanderings, deeper than all our sin. Forgive our frivolous attitude toward life, our callousness toward suffering, our envy of those who have more than we have, our obsession with creating a life of constant pleasure, our indifference to the treasures of heaven, our neglect of your wise and gracious law. Change us so that we may desire what is good, love what you love, and do what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Private Confession

Words of Encouragement

I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more…..I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.
Isaiah 43:25; 44:22

Song of Assurance

(Please Stand)

Alas, and Did My Savior Bleed

Alas and did my Savior bleed; and did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head for sinners such as I?

Chorus: The strangeness of love, my life in Your death,
In Your brokenness, my wholeness revealed.
Your bonds are my freedom, Your sorrow my song
And by Your wounds I am healed.

Was it for crimes that I have done He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! Grace unknown! And love beyond degree! Chorus

But drops of grief can ne’er repay, the debt of love I owe;
Here, Lord, I give myself away, ‘Tis all that I can do. Chorus

And by Your wounds I am healed

Song of Reflection

(Please Stand)

Turn Your Eyes

O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There’s light for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free.

Chorus: Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace

Through death into life everlasting
He passed and we follow Him there
Over us, sin no more hath dominion,
For more than conq’rors we are! Chorus

His word shall not fail you He promised.
Believe Him and all will be well.
Then go to a world that is dying
His perfect salvation to tell. Chorus

SCRIPTURE

1 Peter 5:5-11

5…All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
